Welcome to the Nature Network Medicine and Health group!

Having had a rummage around the network, there don’t seem to be many medicine-related groups. Well, there is a Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics group and a Drug discovery group, but nowhere for people with a more general interest in medicine to air their views. So I thought it was about time to start a Medicine and Health group.

It would be great to hear from people about interesting new research papers or contentious medical stories in the news. Perhaps you have a perspective on the UK vs the US health system, or have some views about alternative medicine that you would like to get off your chest. Maybe you’ve just read a quirky news story and want to share it with everyone.

I’m based in London, so anything I post will probably be from a British perspective or bearing in mind the workings of the NHS, but everyone is welcome!

    • I would wish to comment on my experience of being an active member of the PatientsLikeMe
      ALS community.

      ALS = Motor Neurone Disease.

      I have been following ALS research for about 3.5 years.

      As is reported here on the PLM blog, many ALS patients (now about 120) are participating in the first real-time, real-world, open and non-blinded, patient-driven trial.

      I left my comments here.

      Call this ‘Health 2.0’ or whatever but I find this approach rather encouraging.

      For more background about PatientsLikeMe, check our this interview (text/audio) with PLM Co-Founder Ben Heywood.

    • Ah yes, I forgot to mention patients and patient groups in my categories of potential group members. Reading academic papers I find it all to easy to forget the importance of this group…
