Communicating the risks of swine flu

Swine flu, rightly, continues to be a big story, and the media has an important role to play in communicating information to the general public. How do you think the media have done in communicating the risks of swine flu: have they been alarmist, not given enough information, or not put it in context; or have they presented a balanced account giving the appropriate level of information? What about the governement’s communication strategy? Are scientists best place to inform the public about the risks and status of the pandemic?

    • A friend of mine, 73, recently had a relatively mild case of what looked like swine flu 7 weeks ago. She hasn’t been really well since though, with low energy and a terrible stiff neck that isn’t going away. An MRI diagnosis showed arthritis in her neck, but I don’t think it’s that easy. I think there are some residual effects of her bout of swine flu. I haven’t seen anything about residual symptoms or effects of the illness. Has anyone else?

    • It was mid-60s in NE Ohio at 5 a.m. when I hit the concrete for my daily five-miler. And I was thinking again this morning how quickly our national attention shifts from story to story, event to event. Remember a few weeks ago when we were heading to the hardware stores in search of pitchforks, the better to prod the Wizards of Wall Street into some thoughtful (ethical?) action. Now we’re in the queue at pharmacies stocking up on surgical masks and Therma Flu.

    • Symptoms of swine influenza are similar to those of human seasonal influenza, cough, soar throat, loss of appetite etc…..For most people the illness is mild and will last approximately for 7 days.

    • I don’t think not having enough information would heighten the risk of having swine flu. Most of the cases of swine flu happened in communities with a large number of people, usually in cities. It would be wrong to assume that they don’t have enough information because these locations will definitely have a television, radio, and even newspapers that inform them about the recent situations.

    • There has been an argument put forward that the government should restrict antivirals to those groups who are most at risk of developing serious complications from swine flu. In other words, if people are otherwise healthy, then the NHS should let the virus run its course, treating it with paracetamol and bed rest, as for normal flu.
