London bloggers meet-up

I’m going to try and get along to this event – share a few tales with other bloggers. Anyone interested? I think it’s fairly small scale, but those things are often the most rewarding.
When: Tuesday, November 27, 2007, 7:00 PM
Where: The Camel and Artichoke, Waterloo SE1 7AE
What: Bloggers meet up in a pub and talk about blogging.

I might try to come along— the “small scale” appeals. Are you allowed to go if you are 150, as I am? (I always think of blogging as a young, trendy person’s activity.)
-
You wear your age very well, Maxine.
Of course you’d be welcome. I should add that it’s not specifically a science blogger’s meet-up, but a general gathering for anyone who blogs. But that includes scienctists.
By the way, here’s a link to the latest ’world’s oldest blogger’.

I feel better now, as she’s clearly older than 150. I’ve come across at least two other claimants for the title; maybe some of them will turn up.

Well, I went along and was disappointed not to see either of you!!
Despite its proximity to Waterloo station, which I go to every day it took me forever to find the pub. There were in the order of about 30 bloggers and I chatted to about 5 of them. The next time I go, I must have sentence prepared regarding what I blog about, because “its kind of work-related and I am doing a series on ‘I know an old lady who…’” is just not terribly convincing.
If you go to the photo album you will find a reasonable picture of me (with my eyes open!!!), but after a very interesting conversation with Peter Marshall that included mention of copyright with respect to photos, I am nervous about dropping it here (big smile). Being a keen, but very amateur snapper, I am very pleased to have been introduced to his blogs – the London diary looks especially interesting.
Mirona Iliescu introduced me to the “blog card”. It is basically a business card that contains her name and the web address of her blog (www.gorgeoux.com). I am thinking of having some made for myself, though I could also use the Nature Network moo cards for this purpose.
The organiser, Andy Bargery, was very friendly and took the before-mentioned photos. He has a very useful blog called Cheap Eats in London for those of us who are not able to afford very much after forking out half our salary for to stand on delayed trains on our daily commutes.

Thanks for the lovely report, Bronwen! Gee, know what you mean: “forking out half our salary for to stand on delayed trains on our daily commutes.” Not to mention constant blaring announcements about beggars and informing (nonexisting) staff if you spot one.
But back to the topic — sorry I did not go but I was also invited to a litbloggers brunch the same day — well, I wasn’t invited but a person who runs a site I review for was, and she couldn’t go so they let me go along instead. It was most fascinating. But I felt that two bloggers’ events in a day was a bit much.
If there is another one, maybe we could go together, as I travel from Waterloo also, so would be convenient for the overpriced, delayed, etc…..(last night my train crawled, eventually broke down so we all got kicked off at Wimbledon. Waited ages for the next as all subsequent trains delayed, then of course it was twice as full so had to cram on….you get the picture. Truly horrid and life-sapping. And have you noticed how impossible it is to get onto the Victoria line since St P int opened — srcum of bemused foreigners and other non-london people with massive suitcases, and the stupid foot-traffic clash at top of escalators for 3 underground lines,,,gee, it is Hell!)
-
Yeah, sorry I didn’t make it – off work with the sniffles. Looks like there were quite a few people there whom I know (Mirona, Dan, the Shiny crew), so it was a pity to miss it.

There are so many possible replies to that post Maxine! But before I forget the most important:
There will be another meetup on the 18th of December and now that I know where it should be pretty easy to make. For me, I don’t know about everybody else, that week is starting to feel really full already — am pretty sure that I am free on Tuesday night, but I have not been that careful about writing everything down in the diary.
I have recently been feeling quite irritable about the train service. Do you think that we should write to Ruth Kelly?
I tend to walk to Waterloo in the evenings, as even before the Eurostar move, I found the evening-tube too stressful/upsetting. (I am a much nicer person above ground!) I can imagine that it must be mayhem, though with people suddenly stopping in front of you to think: “where do I go now?”
-
I am not sure if I’ll be here on 18 Dec, Bronwen, but I have put it in my diary to remind myself to check at the time.
Hmm, Ruth Kelly or South West Trains – I wonder which would be most likely to act upon a letter? Walking to Waterloo from Kings Cross area is impressive – and must take a while? Sometimes I catch the Thameslink to Wimbledon and change there, until they took to putting half-length trains on during the evening rush hour — and as the frequency is only every half-hour you can imagine the rest. This route also involves a cold 15 min wait at Wimbledon for my connection so you can’t really “win” whatever you do.
We should probably reconvene this discussion elsewhere as we aren’t sticking to the topic of “London bloggers” — though I suppose this conversation shows how hard it can be to be one in the sense of meeting up in our fair city. -
Turns out that the meeting on the 18th is cancelled – just received an email.
The walk to Waterloo takes me about an hour as I choose rather inefficient routes past Prets for snacks! A serious person could probably do it in 40 minutes.
-
Thanks for the update, Bronwen. Totally sympathise about Pret – you need metabolic fuel for the journey!
