I just wanted to highlight an up coming FREE event organised by the Research Information Network entitled WHAT DOES IT COST AND WHO PAYS? SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATIONS GLOBALLY
AND IN THE UK
It is based on a report they did examining the costs and funding mechanisms of scholarly communications. Not only did it look at publishers’ costs and the cost to academic libraries, but it also identified the hidden costs to researchers in actually producing and accessing journal articles. It also looked at some current changes going on in the area and what that actually means for all parties.
I know it is a bit of shameless advertising, as I am the one organising the event, but I do think it will be a good event and worth “attending”:http://www.rin.ac.uk/what-cost .

I missed this event last year but I’ve been intrigued by the course of a discussion going on about this topic on Liblicense-L see ‘Overlay Journals Over Again’ Has anyone else been following this?
