Networking librarians?

Maybe this could be the only topic in this group. The simple question is: Should librarians network for scientific reasons?

To me, the library and information sciences always seemed to be very concentrated on national issues. International discussion or even collaboration does not really take place.

Maybe networking tools and platforms like Nature Network could establish a new and innovative culture of sharing and discussion?

    • Short update on Library 2.0 in Italy from Mary Joan Crowley

There is a lot happening among the Italian Library Community regarding Web 2.0, libraries, social networking. A survey among Italian Librarians showed large support for the application of blogs, wikis, RSS feeds, IM/chat, a willingness to use Podcasts, social tagging, social networking and media sharing while little or no interest in gaming.

A recent seminar in Rome reported views from abroad regarding Library in the person of Gerry McKiernan and reports from Italy, soon available on demand (will post link when available).

During the seminar Italy’s first version of the 23 Things learning programme to encourage library staff to explore and apply new technologies was launched by the Italian consortium Ciber and will be soon available in the public domain: ciber-23librarythings.

During the seminar examples were given of libraries using web 2.0. These ranged from Italian libraries on Facebook, use of delicious, wikis, podcasts of tutorials, blogs…. ..
Particularly interesting was the use by the Library system in Tuscany of Connotea , creating a list of articles and links for their community.

During the annual meeting of Italian Librarians in Milan , 12-13 March, an afternoon seminar by Cenfor International and Aida will be dedicated to web 2.0 applications and their impact on the library , as well as the role of the social librarian.

Below I have posted a series of links of libraries using web 2.0 tools to just see what is going on.
