NN Italy in the news today

The weekly magazine Nòva, published on Thursdays in the finance and economics daily Il Sole 24 Ore, has dedicated its opening article1 for this week to how social networking in science can bring together scientists in the real word. The point is: enough dialogue on-line via networks such as the Nature Network, including its regional hubs, but is this really bringing new collaborative research opportunities? Is virtual networking making people network?
Indeed, these are recurrent questions.

    • Few days ago I received one of these email chain-letter discussing the paradoxes of our time… I just quote a little piece:

‘- we have more instructions but less common sense
      – more knowledge but less wisdom
      – we write more but learn less
      – we communicate more virtually and less in reality’

I am more positive than this chain-letter but I do believe that despite social-network are powerful tools, as for everything, it depends on the use that you make of them. Most people limits the use of social network to pry into other people’s affairs. I do not thing this apply to Nature Network because the nature of the network ( I always end up with a pun…bugger)is to communicate science, not gossip. However in my experience, the value of NN has been more in learning about other scientific disciplines that in getting to know potential collaborators; I am not even sure that this is what I was expecting from it. But you never know…
