Would you like to see Nature Network local hubs in Italy?

If you look in the top navigation bar, you’ll see that we have ‘local hubs’ for Boston and London where we list local science events, news and jobs information. We’re planning on launching many more in the future and are currently considering the options.

If you’d like to see new local hubs for Italian cities or regions, there’s now a way to vote for this.

• Log in, head to your profile page and click ‘edit your profile’.
• At the top, click ‘change your location’.
• Enter the city or town in which you work. This will set your location.
• Nature Network will then suggest three potential ‘hubs’—regions (not necessarily cities) that may become full-fledged hubs like Boston and London once enough people from that area sign up. Click the one that you belong to.

If you don’t see an option you like, feel free to get in touch with me. We can add to or tweak the proposed hubs according to the wishes of users.

    • Thanks Matt for the info. I am happy to see that Nature Network’s community is growing steadily and new hubs are planned.

I have not clear whether any location that reach a critical mass is eligible to be an hub or the locations are actually competing for few new hubs to be created…

    • Thanks Piero. With regards to your second comment. We’ll launch new hubs when we know there’s an active community of scientists in that city using the site, and we know one or two particularly active members there who might help spread the word about the new hub and write blog posts about local science. We’ll probably only launch a handful of new hubs this year, but there’s no reason we can’t expand to many more in 2009 if the demand is there.

By the way, in response to some feedback, I’ve just added ‘Trento’ as another potential Italian hub. So any scientists who work there can now edit their profiles to ‘vote’ for a Trento hub.

    • Piero, I think (and Matt may correct me if I am wrong) it’s kind of both.
NN is keeping an eye on where users are located, by asking them to fill an extra bit of info on their profile. This way, they can have an idea of which new hubs may one day become local NN portals (such as NN London and NN Boston right now).
Those hubs which host more users are likely to be translated into local portals.

    • I had kept my reply window open for way too long. By the time I had hit “post”, Matt had already replied!

    • Dear Matt and Pinto, and all others. I am working as researcher in biophysical semeiotics in Liguria, Riviera di Levante (Genoa). To my experience, I consider useless to open NN hub in Genoa. In fact, in the Page I hold in some Italian websites (one of them located in Genoa!), I have been writing about Nature.com without any success. Perhaps, to many information kills information.

    • Hi Matt and Massimo,
      Thanks for the clarification.

Massimo I am sure this group could definitely trigger an increase in the Italian representation in the network.
      Keep up the good work!

    • I hope! And may Rome be one of the future NN hubs.

    • Current Hubs situation:

      Bologna
      Genoa
      Milan
      Naples
      Rome
      Trento
      Trieste

    • Dear Massimo,
I am told of hubs in Genoa! May you send me e-mail adress to contact it?

    • Sergio,
all you need to do is to follow the instructions that Matt gave above. There is no emailing involved.
      Ciao!
