"Frivolous scientific visualizations"

Last week, iSGTW featured a link to Manuel Lima’s Information Visualization
Manifesto. This week, they invite you to fill out a poll Are scientific visualizations being used frivolously too often?
The current results can be seen here this only gives an overview. What is your actual opinion?

Ben Goldacre (of Bad Science) actually twittered about visualisations today “I am a massive whore for good data visualisation: it’s the true interface of art and science” and pointed at Improving Visualisation. They seem to work for him.

As someone who tries to get more academics interested in grid computingI think visualisations are great! They give me something to show people which are easily accessible and simple to understand even to someone not from the same research area. However I don’t see the point of a researcher wasting time performing visualisations if they aren’t pertinent to their research. Surely that’s not a good use of their time?
Do they do it because everyone else and they feel they have to keep up?
