In an upcoming iSGTW story, we profile the work of a researcher in the UK who says he can predict burglaries. He takes information about things such as the geographical layout of a city, the quality of its transportation system, the state of the local economy, the stability of local neighborhoods, and the kind of security systems individuals have, run it all through a grid computing system — and tell where the most burglaries will occur. It’s a fascinating use of computing.
At the same time, the UK is also home to one of the most extensive closed-circuit, hidden camera systems in the world, in which every major intersection has multiple cameras, watching everything you say and do.
Are these uses of technology a good way to deal with crime . . . or a frightening intrusion into our private lives?
