Dear Amit
Thanks for pasting information about this recent article of JCB. It’s indeed very nice to see the OPTIMISM of the authors and scientists mentioned in paper saying unanimously that Biological sciences in going up.
BUT It seems that author has left several points and have produced incomplete information and I wonder if they had done enough R&D before writing it. For example, they did not mention at all the one major funding agency of India, INDIAN COUNCIL OF MEDICAL RESEARCH (www.icmr.nic.in). We know that ICMR has ~22 permanet institutions in India including well known NIV Pune, NIRRH Mumbai, NARI Pune and others.
Another major discrepancy in article is that author mentioned that only 2 IITs have Biological sciences BUT as far as I know most of all 7 IITs have now their Biological sciences. They mentioned only IIT Mumbai and IIT kanpur having biological science group but there is Biological departments at IIT Chennai, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Rooraki and also IIT Gowahati. One can go and check it on their respective websites.
Anyway I STRONGLY AGREE and WISH that author are justifiable and CORRECT for raising their demand that fellowships should be increased for JRF/SRF and Postdoctoral candidates in India as soon as possible. So many students in majority leave India after doing their PhD for abroad Postdoctal work. Indian scientists are well enough in many fields to give then postdoc experience in few major institutions in India e.g IISc, JNCASR, NCBS, NII, BARC, TIFR, ICGEB etc. Money becomes important to all PhD passed fellows as mostly gets married till end of their PhD and already we know that Postdoc salary is just ~20000 including HRA in India. Although 40K USD per annual postdoc salary is ~8 times more than India but its less than average USA per capita income of 43K?
Sorry if I wrongly mentioned any false information. Don’t hesitate to rectify itArun
