Iron In Arthritis

The question as to HOW man acquires the age-related iron accumulation is questioned.

In the study of nutrition in man there is a a window in which nutrition experts , nutrition gurus , medical nutritionists and doctors seem to adhere to.
The recommended daily allowance ,the RDA for protein , is 3 grams of protein intake per pound of weight in a human.
That is about 50 grams for a 150 pound man.
Research has shown the same man can live on 15 grams of protein.

Now who is right .. ?
The RDA for protein is four times higher than what the famous Danish
dietician .. Dr M. Hindbede says a 150-lb. man can live on.

“Dr M. Hindbede, famous Danish dietician, says a 150-lb. man can live
on half an oz. of protein a day”

The RDA for protein is .8 gm/kg bodyweight, or 56 gm for a 154 lb
male.

The RDA for iron , the recommended amount of iron required , according to the RDA is set at a certain amount.

The iron added to our foods has been shown to be a possible factor in Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis.

This was evidenced in a study completed over a decade ago.

Arthritic kids’ iron supplements may hasten joint deterioration.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The iron supplements that many arthritic children take to
combat concomitant anemia may be hastening the deterioration of their joints,
Houston researchers say.

A Texas team Led by biologist Roman Shypailo of the Children’s Nutrition Research Centre at Baylor College of Medicine, looked at eight children being treated for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
The patients received an intravenous radioactive tracer dose of iron (0.03 microsievert).
The patients were aged five to 15 years.
Affected joints were monitored for iron activity in a position/energy-sensitive gamma counter.
A second machine monitored whole-body iron retention.
Two hours post-infusion iron deposition was measured and again at days seven, 14, 28 and 56.

Anemic
“We found that iron excessively accumulates in arthritic joints and probably
contributes to the chronic damage,” said Shypailo.
“That puts you between a rock and a hard place because many of these arthritic kids are anemic and need iron supplements, which may worsen the disease.”

The study found a high level of agreement between the joint data and the
whole-body data, with a greater than 90% retention rate of the infused iron
both in joints and systemically.
Furthermore, six of eight patients showed increased uptake at the affected joints: 165% over the first 30 days compared with initial uptake at two hours.

The next step, he says, is to see if there is excessive deposition of dietary
iron in arthritic joints.

IRON DEPOSITION IN THE JOINTS OF CHILDREN WITH JUVENILE RHEUMATOID
ARTHRITIS

“We also found that six of the eight subjects had excess uptake of the iron isotope in their joints.”

IRON METABOLISM IN CHILDREN WITH JUVENILE RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS (JRA).2
[European Society for Pediatric Research Abstracts]

Conclusion: Decreased Fe absorption and incorporation into RBCs demonstrate abnormal regulation of Fe metabolism in children with JRA.
Excess Fe may be inappropriately deposited into affected joints.

This study seems to show , bread , or ANYTHING fortified with
iron could be a potential problem .

Effect of iron complexes on adjuvant arthritis in rats.
Ann Rheum Dis. 1992 Apr;51(4):516-21.
Dabbagh AJ, Blake DR, Morris CJ.

The results of this study suggest that the iron induced
increase in synovitis in adjuvant arthritis is a result of
iron promoted oxidative damage and is not likely to be due to the
dextran C or the sorbitol citric acid components.
It is suggested that a similar mechanism may occur in
rheumatoid patients given iron supplements.
