The journal article - what does it really cost to produce and gain access to?

I just wanted to highlight an up coming FREE event organised by the Research Information Network entitled WHAT DOES IT COST AND WHO PAYS? SCHOLARLY COMMUNICATIONS GLOBALLY
AND IN THE UK
It is based on a report they did examining the costs and funding mechanisms of scholarly communications. Not only did it look at publishers costs and the cost to academic libraries, but it also identified the hidden costs to researchers in actually producing and accesing journal articles. It also looked at some current changes going on in the area (like Open Access, Electronic publishing and payment for peer review) and what that actually means for all parties involved.
It would be great to get some researchers there to talk about it, and discuss the types of changes reseachers would like to see happen in the area.
I know it is a bit of shameless advertising, as I am the one organising the event, but I do think it will be a good event and worth attending.
If you are interested, click here .

It does indeed look good, Branwen, and I am going to try to get there. Unfortunately I have two prior committments on the same day, but I am trying to rearrange those.
In the meantime, it would be lovely to know if any other Nature Network users are thinking of going. -
I am going to try and post some of the points that are brought up during the day on this site. And if people would like more information they can email me and I will be more than happy to help them. We are also planning on posting a podcast of the speakers giving a brief overview of their talks on our web site after the event.
So hopefully even if people can’t attend but are interested in the topic we can generate a bit of debate/discussion after.

This looks very interesting! I would definitely be interested in a write-up and podcasts, if possible. Thanks Branwen!

I will write more later, but thought I would let people know that the speakers presentations are on our website and the podcast will be up soon.
I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts.

Activities, costs and funding flows in the scholarly communications system in the UK: the model
A user-friendly version of the model with a handbook is now available for people to make their own adjustments. Since the completion of the report there have been a number of changes to the economic position of the UK and we have updated the model to allow the user to change the VAT and the exchange rates as appropriate.
