We have had a lot of news about the Large Hadron Collider today. Liz Wager has a different perspective on this important science event. In a blog post (Liz Wager on the Large Hadron Collider – a qualified success?) she writes about the use of qualifying adjectives in scientific papers, specifically about the subtle differences between big and large.

Maybe her next post will be about “fewer” and “more”.
There is often a tendency in scientific papers for the authors to use more than one qualifying adjective per noun, when it is not only unnecessary but distracts from the clarity. -
Martin, on a separate note your first link turns out to be to the dreaded Technorati. I clicked it before I realised and after a long wait got the usual message:
“Doh! The Technorati Monster escaped again.
We’re currently experiencing backend issues and are working to resolve them as quickly as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.”Here’s a link to the Nature news special on the LHC which I trust will be more reliable….here’s hoping!

Maxine, I didn’t know what link I should use for the LHC. There were so many blog posts about it that I used this (now broken) technorati. I’m looking forward to Nature Blogs.

I know what you mean, Martin, I am LHC’d out! Nature Blogs will be great for this kind of thing, I agree.
