To get this forum started, I recommend this classic text
Watson JD, Crick FD. Molecular Structure of Nucleic Acids; a structure for deoxyribose nucleic acid. Nature 1953;171:737-8.
The full text can be found here. This text was written in a different era. But is still a wonderful example of clear writing – and British understatement.

This discussion reveals what tyrants contemporary editors are. Frankly, I am struck by the density of the text, often found in this period of science writing.

I very seriously doubt this paper would be published today. I can just imagine the referees comments; “No experimental evidence to back up their claims”, “hyperbolic conjecture”, “This would be better suited to THE TIMES letters page”, “Needs more work”, “where is the supplementary data?”, “Is this a joke, I have better things to do than to review this drivel”.
