Evsikov AV, MarĂn de Evsikova C. Evolutionary origin and phylogenetic analysis of the novel oocyte-specific eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E in Tetrapoda. Dev Genes Evol. 2008 Dec 17. [Epub ahead of print]

Once member of the family of eIF4E eukaryotic translation initiation factors is expressed only in oocytes in Tetrapoda. Suppressing the expression of this protein, eIF4E1B, by injecting Morpholinos into Xenopus tropicalis oocytes accelerated the maturation of oocytes after progesterone treatment, suggesting a repressor role for eIF4E1B during oocyte maturation.
