hi, this group aims to join portuguese scientists and students that work all around the world in the field of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. News, events, comments on papers and other relevant information can be posted here! Hope we will have many members and great discussions!
So para perceber melhor o objectivo deste grupo: falamos em ingles ou portuges? por outras palavras, a vocacao do grupo e’ envolver pessoas ha’ volta de interesses comuns ou oportunidades unicas por sermos portugueses? No segundo caso, que eu acho mais interessante, valia a pena segmentar esta comunidade pela lingua de comunicacao. Eu trabalho nos USA ha’ mais de uma decada e tenho dupla nacionalidade de maneira que este comentario nao e’ a defender corporativismos nacionalistas. Estou so a tentar perceber onde quer ir este grupo. Ana? queres arriscar uma resposta?
Ola, a questao que o Jonas coloca e muito pertinente. Quando ouvi falar na Nature Network, e a explorei, surgiu-me a ideia de criar este grupo, uma comunidade, porque honestamente ainda nao sei bem se ha muitos ou poucos portugueses a estudar biologia computacional (parece-me que ate ha bastantes…). Enderecei convites aos Portugueses que conheco nesta area, mas gostaria de conhecer outros…
Nessa mesma altura, pensei se deveria ser em Portugues ou Ingles e se devia permitir a entrada de qualquer pessoa (mesmo que nao fosse portuguesa). Deixei que assim fosse mas, na realidade, gostaria de saber a opiniao dos membros. Por permitir que este grupo fosse publico e que escrevi aqui no forum a primeira mensagem em ingles.
Gostaria que esta iniciativa permitisse que se conhecessem grupos de investigacao onde participem Portugueses, eventos que se realizem no nosso pais nesta area, oportunidades de emprego, colaboracoes, etc. Por tudo isto, partilho com o Jonas o facto deste grupo pretender veicular oportunidades unicas por sermos portugueses.
No entanto, gostaria de ouvir mais opinioes sobre o assunto, nomeadamente (i) a pertinencia de continuar a conhecer esta rede e (ii) a continuacao do grupo no modo ‘publico’, permitindo a entrada de qualquer elemento.

Hi, today I got an email from an editor of Nature Network gently asking that if we’re putting up a post in Portuguese, to at least post an English translation alongside it. Although the terms and conditions and ‘community guidelines’ pages don’t make it clear that Nature Network is an English language website, the editors have to monitor and moderate the website and they can’t do that very easily if postings are in foreign languages. Also, that will benefit other users, because other computational biologists who don’t speak Portuguese might want to read what we have to say and contribute to the discussion. I hope everyone understands this point of view…

At the same time I wondered if it should be in Portuguese or English and if more people should be allowed to join (even if not Portuguese). I let it be that way but, in fact, I’d like to know the members’ opinion. For having allowed this group to be public, I wrote the first post in English.
I’d like this forum to allow us to know other research groups that have Portuguese people, events in this field taking place in our country, jobs opportunities, collaborations, etc. So, I agree with Jonas when he says that this group should convey unique opportunities for Portuguese people.
However, I’d like you to express your ideas, namely (i) how relevant is continuing to grow this network and (ii) about the fact that this is a public group and it allows that anyone can join it.
