Hot Topics for collaborative publications

Please suggest a ‘hot topic’ that we could discuss here. If we have sufficient discussion on one of these topics, it will be possible to put your contributions on this topic together into a “current opinion-type” of publication, on which participants could be authors.

This idea is supported by the CFG’s Administrative Core, who would like to put together some sort of special journal issue that includes reviews and opinions written by CFG members. Since CFG already has a partnership with Nature, we are hoping to interest them in publishing this project, perhaps as one of their supplemental issues. Your participation in Nature Network discussions could be a first step toward this.

Jim Paulson suggested that we should look at Nature Precedings as a possible place to pre-publish the article resulting from the discussion on Nature Network. This will provide a place to gather the ideas together, give potential authors immediate gratification for their efforts, and get feedback before moving on to a more traditional publication. Perhaps the use of a Nature gateway site, Nature Network, and Nature Precedings to put together a publication might further encourage Nature to publish the article in one of their journals.

    • I think that a hot topic that we could discuss is the use of community resources to develop modular tools for processing and analysis of high-throughput glycomics data. Such tools could be implemented as downloadable applications or as Web Services. Several issues must be discussed in detail, including the availability of modules already in existence (e.g, those developed for use in proteomics analysis), the type and format of data that these tools would process and return (i.e., standards), and methods for tool discovery and effective workflow composition (e.g., a web site that provides access to the tools and methods for their incorporation into larger processes). In my opinion, putting all this into a single “review” would make a great resource for us all.

    • Would it be possible to set up a listing of the different services that are currently available on this forum? I’m not familiar with this forum thing, but a place for members to put up links might be useful. Maybe like a blog? I’m sure that many of the members of this group (including myself) have already developed several tools/services; they just need to be listed somewhere. A central listing here would make it easier to publish in a review as well. I know that glycosciences.de and the CFG have posted links to related web sites, but these do not necessarily include web services which programmers can use. Although an option would be to have a single person collect services to eventually post together, I don’t think that would be necessary just to get an initial idea of what is out there.
