Reading and Predicting Network Behavior

The concept of trying to understand holistic network behavior is finally being used to try to “read” minds. And while 80% accuracy on a universe of only 8 alternatives seems rather weak, it’s proof of concept, and I doubt localized fMRI would ever be able to achieve this, let alone scale.
I think this approach is even more poignant for cancer research and understanding/predicting the state trajectory of genetic and biochemical networks than it is for neural networks since the latter is massively more complex. Is anyone doing serious work yet on this?
