I’m based in Vancouver and my job involves helping a group of basic and clinical researchers with ther grant and manuscript submissions. I’m also involved in developing a website to describe their research to the public.
With that bias in mind, future forum topics that I’d like to see might include such things as the state of research funding in Canada etc.

Thanks for starting this group and discussion. Just a FYI for everyone, we get stats on what countries our users are coming from (based on their IP addresses, I believe). Canada has consistently been in the top 5.I’m one of the editors of Nature Network, and I’ve been in the Boston area since 2001. I grew up in Ottawa and most of my family is now in Toronto, so I try to get home a few times a year to visit.
I’d definitely be interested in hearing more from everyone about the state of research and funding in Canada. What are the major trends people are seeing? How does the future look?
I’m quite interested in the MaRS project in Toronto. What do people think of that? (Disclaimer: my father is a consultant working at MaRS)

I’m based in Portugal. I’m a biological engineering student and will soon be performing an internship at MIT.
Although I live in Portugal, I was born in South Africa and also lived a few years in Canada. In Toronto to be more specific.
I’ll be keeping an eye on your topics regarding research funding in Canada :)

Right now I’m just wondering why all the big Canadian grant deadlines are clustered together in late Feb / early March… not making my life any easier right now!

I’ve been in Toronto for the past 5.5 years, working on my PhD, but I’m originally from Holland. I’m currently in the process of getting permanent residency in Canada so I’ll stay for at least a little bit longer after I’m done.

Corie: I’ve been to many lectures at MaRS, and have found them extremely useful.
Eva: I recognize your name from the editorial board of Hypothesis (a journal based here at U of T).
Ryan: I did my B.Sc. in Biochemistry at Guelph.

I work for MaRS in Toronto.Jeff, I’m glad to hear that you’ve found some of our event topics useful. We’re always looking for feedback on what to do that would be better, so please let me know!
I handle all of the web initiatives for MaRS, including the blog. I used to run a health portal and now I write and edit all kinds of stuff about the research and innovation happening in Toronto as well as the big stuff that happens elsewhere.
I’m basically in charge of getting our innovators to talk to each other online as well as the MaRS online message.
I’m really interested in hearing about trends as well as it will help me get the right guest writers and articles on our site.

I am currently based in Rome, Italy, and I am working in the field of low-dose radiation biology, with a special interest in its implication in the outcome of radiation therapy of cancer and the quality of life of survivors.
In the past decade, I have lived in the UK, for my PhD, and in the US, for a post-doctoral fellowship. There are some excellent research groups in my field in Canada and I am eager to consolidate collaborations with them.
I am subscribing to this forum as I would like to gain a better perspective on the Canadian research scenario.

I am monumentally bad at keeping track of all these Nature Network fora and discussions and groups and so forth, but I’ll try and keep an eye on this one.
For reference, I’m from Kingston (at the other end of Lake Ontario from my current location in Toronto), and did my BSC, PhD and postdoctoral training (plus six years in the private sector) in Toronto. Currently helping to keep the wheels on at The Centre for Applied Genomics, which is part of The Hospital for Sick Children (aka SickKids).

Hi everyone – I’m a post-doc at The University of Western Ontario (where I also just completed my PhD) in astronomy. I specifically study asteroids and comets in our solar system.
I have lived in Canada all my life – growing up in Calgary and doing my BSc there, then moving to Edmonton (which lasted for a whole six months!). I spent 2.5 years in Winnipeg getting my MSc, then moved to London, ON, in 2005 and have been here ever since!
Hopefully I can provide some insights into the Canadian system for those who want it.
