I’m passing on some information about a course running this summer in Toronto and Edmonton, that will teach scientists how to properly use computers to make their work go faster (data analysis, etc. – All those computer things that you wish you could do…)
There are a couple of spaces left, and the good news is that there are travel grants available for students from other provinces to attend the Toronto course.
The course also includes a day of guest speakers that will include talks about open notebook science and online collaboration.
If you’re interested, the information is below. Feel free to pass this on to people who might be interested in your departments.

Thanks to grants from MITACS and Cybera, the University of Toronto and the University of Alberta will offer the Software Carpentry course as a
condensed three-week boot camp this summer from July 13-31, 2009. This
course is an accelerated introduction to software development aimed at
graduate students in science and engineering; its goal is to give them the tools and skills they need to use computers more effectively in their research. 16 spaces are available in Toronto to students registered in full-time graduate programs in Canada, while another 16 spaces are available in Edmonton to graduate students from Alberta. The fee for the course is $500, but grants of up to $1500 for students from outside the Greater Toronto Area attending the Toronto offering are available to help offset travel and accommodation costs.

If you wish to attend the course, or would like more information on content, schedule, prerequisites, eligibility, or other details, please contact either Prof. Greg Wilson <gvwilson@cs.utoronto.ca> or Prof. Paul Lu <paullu@cs.ualberta.ca>. Please also subscribe to the new Software Carpentry blog for updates.
