Effects on cognition by Erythropoietin

Many people know Erythropoietin (EPO) because of its use for blood doping. It has other effects though, as some recent research has shown: Differential effects of erythropoietin on neural and cognitive measures
The mechansm is unclear yet. Could this kind of finding be a role model for interaction between body and cognition?
