Here is a short preview on some of the NNBerlin activities ahead. We are planning to dig into the wealth of world class scientists at this years XX International Congress of Genetics that will be held in Berlin in July (12-17). Our idea is to use our contacts to ‘persuade’ some of the distinguished speakers to participate in a number of exclusive Nature Network events, and to thereby provide our members the opportunity to closely interact with leading scientists in the field of genetics. Several outstanding researchers have already signaled their interest and we are in the progress of arranging the details for the planned event(s).

Much progress has been made in recent years in elucidating the molecular mechanisms responsible for the phenotypic differentiation of primary afferent neurons as well as spinal dorsal horn neuronal circuits to which sensory neurons connect. We now also understand a lot more about the molecules (ion channels and other proteins) that allow sensory neurons to detect biologically relevant thermal and mechanical stimuli.

The aim of this conference is to bring together reserachers interested in the development and function of the somatosensory system. We will explore the idea that the development of the somatosensory system may in turn help us also to understand its functional organization and pathology in human disease.

Max Delbrück Communications Center
Berlin-Buch from 14 – 17 May 2008.
