Working in Nature (non-native speaker)

Hi everyone!
I’ve always wanted to work in a journal as part of the editorial team, as I value the experience of reading about lots of topics, seeing how a project (or field) develops, etc. In fact I eagerly await to complete my PhD to start seeking for a job in this field.
Just for fun, I always check the Job Section of my print issue of Nature to check the market for this. Recently, I’ve become a little concerned regarding not being an English native speaker.
So my question is… can someone be part of the editorial team of a Journal, like Nature (and I’m not referring to copyediting, but as an assistant or senior editor of a particular subfield), without being an english native speaker?
Cheers!

Hello Alejandro
Nice to hear from you. The answer to your question is yes, you can be a senior editor at Nature or a Nature journal without being a native English speaker. In the manuscript team at Nature, for example, there are or recently have been French, Dutch, German, Italian, Chinese, Spanish and other native-language speakers.
Of course, these staff have the legal right to live and work in the UK or US (depending on where they are based) – that’s also a factor to consider as legislation has recently changed in the UK, for example, in this regard.
Best wishes
Maxine.
