Mostly in-house, I have to say. Where are you based?
-
At the Nature research journals we also do freelance, particularly if there is a shortage of staff or lot of extra work for special projects. But usually it is good to have some scientific background, the texts can be rather technical.

aaargh, based in Newcastle Upon Tyne.
I have a BSc in Biochemsitry and a PhD in Stem cell/Mitochondrial research. Joerg – is it worth submitting my CV? Would I send it to the editor of each individual journal?

Hello Katherine
I strongly advise you to read the job advertisements in each case, and only apply to those which you think you are qualified for. Also, the advert will specify where the post is, and if it states “London” that is what we need – someone in London. So if you can’t move, then there is no point in applying.
We get a lot of people applying for these posts, so we take care to list all essential criteria in each job advert, to save the candidate and us from wasting our time.

eek, Maxine – sorry, I wasn’t making myself clear!!
I have no intention of applying for the sub-editor/copy-editor posts as I’m based too far North!
I was trying to ask Joerg if it is worth submitting my CV to enquire for freelance proofreading work, or do you already have an established list of freelancers?
-
Sorry, too, for the misunderstanding, Katherine.
At Nature we do use freelance proofreaders on occasion (mainly to cover for staff absences), but we need them to come into the office to do the work, so it sounds as if it would not work for you. Joerg can answer on behalf of Nature Materials.
At Nature we do keep a file of people who have offered to do freelance work and who are suitably qualified, but it all requires coming into the London office. At the moment, we do not have any freelance needs, only the permanent E-subeditor vacancy listed here.
Best wishes
Maxine. -
Hi guys, sorry, didn’t check NNetwork in the past few days.
To get back to you, Katherine, your qualifications are slightly beyond our physical sciences scope, but some of the other Nature research journals might be interested. But it won’t make sense to contact the individual editors, as subediting is done as part of our production. I have spoken to our subeditor, and she is happy to pass on your details to relevant colleagues.
I can’t see your email address in your profile, so perhaps drop me a very brief email with your email address, so that I can pass on our subeditor’s details to you. My email address is on my profile page (you may have to follow/unfollow me to get it displayed), but it is following the usual initial.lastname@nature scheme.
Hope that helps.

Have emailed you, Joerg.
thanks guys – I’m very grateful that you’ve taken time out to help!
