For people interested in an editorial position, all the current vacancies at Nature Publishing Group are listed on this page. There is a separate category for editorial posts. At time of writing (15 April 2008), there is a position in _Nature_’s team of editors for a neuroscientist; a locum editor position at Nature Cell Biology: an associate editor position at Nature Chemistry (a new journal that will be launched early in 2009): and other positions at Nature Protocols, Nature Clinical Practice and others. Many of these jobs are appropriate for suitably qualified scientists wanting to embark on a career in scientific journal editing. Positions are advertised on the page I’ve linked above as they come up, so it is worth bookmarking it if you might be interested in applying in future. You can also read about the different types of editorial opportunities at NPG.

I will add editorial vacancies, as they come up, to this forum thread, as “replies”.

    • Good Lord, they say timing is everything! Evertime I’m ready to apply to NPG, there are no jobs. The minute my contract is extended, you need editors! :)

    • Nature, the international weekly journal of science, seeks to appoint an Ecology and Evolution Editor to join a team dedicated to publishing the world’s best original research in the biological sciences. The successful candidate will play a key role in determining how biological sciences are represented – through the selection and preparation of manuscripts for publication and by acting as _Nature_’s interface with the relevant research communities. These are demanding and intellectually stimulating positions, and call for a keen interest in the practice and communication of science. The ideal candidate will have a strong track record of research in ecology and evolution and ideally theoretical biology, but highly qualified candidates from other areas of the biological sciences are also encouraged to apply. Applicants should hold or expect shortly to receive a PhD or equivalent degree. This position is preferably based in _Nature_’s London office but positions in US offices may also be considered; the position will involve international travel to meetings and laboratories. Please apply by sending your CV, covering letter (including your class of degree, a brief account of your research and other relevant experience, and details of your current salary) and a concise discussion of recent scientific developments which you have found particularly exciting (stating why).
Applications should be sent to:, Geetika Juneja, Macmillan Publishers Limited, 4 Crinan Street, London N1 9XW or by email to londonpersonnel@macmillan.co.uk. Please quote reference number NPG/LON/880 in your application. Closing date, 30 May 2008.

    • Another current opportunity:

Genetics editor for Nature. London, New York or Boston. Closing date, 6 June 08.

    • Hi Maxine,

I know it’s been a while since you posted these positions, but I’d like to ask if they have anything to do with the following position of news reporter published in the Guardian Jobs – http://jobs.guardian.co.uk/job/529603/news-reporter/

I’m asking that because I would like to apply for a reporter position, but not for an editor position (at least not yet). Supposing they are completely different things, I will definitely apply for the Guardian’s one.

(and in this case the link above can useful for others reporters-who-are-not-editors to apply)

      many thanks

      Barbara

    • Hello Barbara

Yes, the job link you provide is to a different job from the ones I have linked to here. I am linking only to editors’ jobs here, as this is a forum for editors. The job you’ve identified is for a reporter in the News team at Nature, a very nice bunch – but it is firmly a science journalism job, rather than an editor job.

All vacancies at NPG are advertised on the web page provided in the notice at the top of this forum..but the news reporter position isn’t listed with the editorial positions (don’t ask me why), it is further down the page, here. However, it is fine to apply using the Guardian site, as we advertise our positions in quite a few publications, usually.

I wish you all the best with your application, should you decide to apply.

    • Hi Maxine,

Sorry for not figuring out that the forum was only for editors, and thanks a lot for the explanation. Guess I’m going to apply and see what happens…

    • Absolutely no need to apologise, Barbara!
It is me if anyone who needs to apologise: the reason I’m only posting editor jobs here is that the editors in this group can answer queries about these types of job. We don’t have any of our journalists from Nature in this group so I didn’t think it would be useful for members to post these openings as we wouldn’t be able to help that much with any queries.
      all the best
      Maxine.

    • Nature Clinical Practice is currently recruiting a journal editor for the Endocrinology and Metabolism journal. NPG is accepting applications for this position until 12th Jun and the full advert is here.

Nature Clinical Practice publications are medical review journals that deliver timely, authoritative interpretations of key research developments that appear in the primary literature, translating the latest findings into clinical practice.

Try having a look at the Work@NPG current vacancies section in the About NPG portion of nature.com. It’s a bit easier to see an overview of all the current vacancies at NPG on this site than on naturejobs.

      He asked, plaintively.
