Internships at Nature: information?

Dear all,
I am looking for information about writing/editing internship programs at Nature, but I didn’t manage to find any information.

Where and when are these positions advertised?

How long does the internship program usually last? Does it start at some specific time of the year, i.e. should one apply at some special time? Is there an application deadline, and if yes, where can one find it? What kind of experience is required?

Thanks,
Claudia

    • Nature Publishing Group have just started advertising their graduate internship scheme.

I’ve posted a bit more about the internship in response to your query on the Science Writers forum.

    • Yes, as Helen says, we advertise all our positions in Naturejobs (free to access) — internships (including News internships, which are not part of the formal NPG internship programme) and editorial positions (often short-term locums to cover maternity absence, for those interested in a temporary appointment rather than a permanent switch from science research to publishing), so it is worth checking there. There are quite a few editorial positions being advertised currently.

    • I’m interested in the round of graduate internships starting September 2009. From this thread I get the impression that I should wait until April, when the positions will be advertised again. But from the internship page on the website (at the very bottom, right underneath the photo of Helen) it seems that you can always send in a letter and CV/resume.

Is it wiser to wait until the announcement, when people are expecting applications, or would it be beneficial to send something in a few weeks earlier? Will applicants be notified of receipt of the letter? I’m just scared of my application either getting lost in a pile, or getting lost because it’s not in the pile.

(I’m posting this anonymously, so that it’s less embarrassing if I don’t make it in…)

    • You can apply ad hoc at any time, as occasionally internships come up outside the two main hiring dates. But I do recommend also responding to the advertisement, when there is one, stating that you’ve already applied and asked for your application to be kept on file, but reminding the HR department of this, and your continued interest.
      Best wishes and good luck
      Maxine.

    • Thank you, Maxine, that’s a good idea!

    • I’ve actually heard that the internship program has been halted due to the current economic climate. Is this true?

    • I think that question is best sent to the NPG HR office – this is an “ask the editor” forum. (I don’t know the answer.)

    • Hi Maxine,
You mention two main hiring dates. Are there two in-takes for graduate internships (September and…?)

      Thanks,
      Serin

    • Hello Serin
There are two intakes for the Nature news internships, which are different from the NPG corporate programme of internships. For information about the corporate programme, you need to go to the NPG website “work at NPG” (URL/link is in this forum) and look there. If the information isn’t there, or at Nature Jobs (where you can save your searches), there is an email link at the NPG “work at NPG” page.

      All the best
      Maxine.

    • Unfortunately both the Nature graduate internship and the editorial positions require the right to live and work either in the US or UK. SO is there any way that international students get atleast a short term opportunity to work at Nature, even if it is at other locations in the world?
