Employer videos? Is all publicity good publicity?

You might have seen some of the brilliant, terrible or downright depressing corporate videos that have been making their way around youtube recently, but what do you think of employer videos?
Are they useful? Are you more likely to apply to a job if you’ve taken a virtual look around? Do you even have time to watch them? What kind of things would you want to see in one? A walkaround a lab or a speech from a director? Views please!

Hi Amit, thanks for joining the group! Have you seen any recruitment videos on youtube (or elsewhere)?

Google has connected youtube and adsense.. now website publishers are showing educational/career/jobs related video ads on their websites.. jobs.ac.uk also have employer’s video.. you can also check career.tv’s Federal Bureau of Investigation, Recruiter Q&A video as an example of non youtube employer’s video.

Thanks Amit, I’ve seen the ones on Jobs.ac.uk in my trawl of the internet. What do you think of them? Do you think they are genuine? I’m really keen to get your opinion on employer videos in general. Do you like them? Would you use them?

I would use them…if the videos look serious and professional. However, I have heard a lot of people complaining that have never had a job offer through their applications on-line. I wonder if networking works better to land a job…I got a job by adding my CV in sites like nature, science and cancer research. I also wonder if we should use more those websites so more employers begin looking at them to find us too.

Video is the way of the future especially in a tight labour market. The employee has the opportunity to find out about a companies culture, environment and see of there is a fit. Done well corporate videos can enhance quality job seekers. I would suggest that if there is a low barrier to entry such as cost and minimal time spent on producing the video then this would be huge in the recruitment industry.

i’m sure it’s a good thing and also a way for an employer to show what working with them is all about. however it takes more time to watch a video than to skim over a quick company profile. personally i’d only watch the video of a company i was already interested in and probably not bother with others. i guess part of it is giving jobseekers a good reason to watch the video in the first place and then make sure the video itself is actually worth their time.

Thanks for your feedback everyone, this will help our decision of whether or not to introduce videos to Naturejobs.com.
