Social networking has revolutionized the way we communicate and share information with one another in today’s society. Various social networking websites are being used by millions of people every day on a regular basis and it now seems that social networking is a part of everyday life. The use of online social networks is growing rapidly. In June 2008, Alexa¹ reported that seven of the top ten most visited websites globally, were social networking or web 2.0 sites. During the same time, ComScore² found:
• MySpace having more than 55 million unique visitors and a 23% year-over-year growth rate
• Facebook growing by 129%
• Bebo growing by 83%
• Imeem growing by 1,590%
• 17% of UK internet users have social networking site profiles
• 51% of online Indians use social networking sites and sites such as Orkut and Facebook account for 44% of time online
• In China, social networking sites are attracting millions of members
• Brazil has the highest usage of social networking sites in the worldAs popular as these sites are, there is a growing frustration with users of social networking sites that indicates that the sites are becoming too large, making it difficult to connect with others sharing the same interests. Advertisers are faced with similar concerns, as their messages may be lost in the noise of large social networking sites. Scientists will benefit from LabRoots’ ability to provide specific content of interest, while advertisers benefit from LabRoots’ ability to precisely target the right customer for their product or service.
“LabRoots is the first science based online community to encompass social networking features and tools available for all science verticals. Our focus is to help science professional’s network, learn, and build relationships that matter,” said LabRoots CEO Greg Cruikshank, “We are delivering the most popular functions of social networking for science professionals, engineers, and researchers. I am confident that LabRoots will become the platform all scientists from around the world use on a routine basis.”
¹ Alexa has built an unparalleled database of information about sites that includes statistics, related links and more.
² ComScore provides industry-leading Internet audience measurement services that report, with unmatched accuracy, details of online media usage, visitor demographics and online buying power for the home, work and university audiences across local U.S. markets and markets across the globe.- Website:
