Question for Jim Loftus : Moving form academia to industry

Hi,
I’m an early stage postdoctoral scientist with cell biology/biochemistry experience. My experience so far has always been in acadmia and was wondering, how important is previous industrial experience when applying for a job in industry? Do you have any advice on how to get relevant experience?
Thanks
Dan

Hi Dan,
It does depend what job you are going for but, if the job is a research based job, it is far more important the research you have conducted in your PhD and PD than in specific industrial experience. Many positions posted are looking for newly qualified PhDs and recent post docs rather than folks with years of industry experience. That being said, if you can perhaps get involved in some collaborative work with industry or network with industrial scientists this will give you a bit more of an idea of how industry works which could help in an interivew process.
Does this help?

Yeah, definitely that does help.
Thanks

You should also be aware there are many schemes out there to link academia with industry, which can be a way of gaining industrial knowledge – which make you more potentially atractive for industrial jobs. The research councils have various schemes, as does the EU through Marie Curie:

For Marie Curie queries contact thew ukro office: www.ukro.ac.uk ask about Marie Curie Industry-Academia Partnerships

Hi,
Since I am also hoping to move to industry from academia but I am in the United States. So if you guys have any idea about the schemes out here to link academia with industry? I am very much enthusiastic about any way of gaining industrial knowledge – which can make me ready for industrial jobs.
