The history of the solar system is shaped by impacts at all scales.
Three Letters in this week’s Nature; 26 June 2008 argue that the lowlands of the northern hemisphere of Mars mark one of the largest of these impacts, a partially obscured basin over 10,000 kilometres long. A package of other coverage looks at impacts of all sizes.
