Reply from Ernie Hood

SCONC July meeting: Podcasting 101

Where: Sigma Xi, RTP
When: Thursday, July 10, 6:00-8:00 PM

Facing demands for Web 2.0 content? Not sure where to start?

If so, SCONC has a solution. We’ll hear from a national expert on podcasting to bring us all up to speed. Ryan Irelan of Podcast Free America will be sharing his experience with us in a seminar titled Podcasting 101. He’ll cover the history, technology and uses of this compelling medium, and by the end of the evening you’ll be ready to jump in and get started. Ryan is co-author of The Business Podcasting Book and creator of Podcast Free America, a podcasting how-to site.

Please RSVP to Ernie Hood (bkthrough at earthlink.net) no later than Tuesday July 8. If you tell us you’ll be there, we’ll be ordering food for you, so please let us know as soon as possible if your plans change.

Hope to see you at our next SCONC extravaganza!!!

Reply from Clinton Colmenares

I think SCONCs can be very influential in shaping the delivery and availability of science news—across the board, across the world—in the next few years. We can help determine what science news looks like.
To that end, I think it’s important to consider the average consumers who are now starved of legitimate science content due to the continually shrinking ranks of science writers at mainstream news outlets.
Scientists are interested in science; it’s the non-scientists, young and old, who need information (read Cory Dean’s June 10 NYT article and consider politicians!) and inspiration.
So, how do we reach them (while leaving individual institutional interest aside)?
I’m willing to help pull together a discussion if there is a critical mass willing to help execute a plan of action.

Reply from Bora Zivkovic

How about a workshop for graduate students who plan to get out of research and want to become science writers or journalists instead, yet do not know how to go about it. Our experiences SCONCs can give good pointers.

Reply from Ernie Hood

Glad to, Fenella. Right now we are finalizing plans for podcasting to be the focus of our July SCONC meeting, to take place at Sigma Xi. I have a commitment from Ryan, the expert I mentioned in my earlier post. I think everyone will enjoy and learn a lot from his presentation and advocacy of the medium.

We’re working on settling on a date at this point. Stay tuned…Once everything is in place, I’ll post again and the information will go out to the entire list. That will hopefully be very soon so that everyone can get the event on their calendars.

BTW, any suggestions out there for an August SCONC meeting site/topic? And don’t forget June 11 SCONC at NESCent!

Reply from Fenella Saunders

Can Ernie or Russ post an update on things? I understand from the SCONC meeting yesterday that things are rolling along with the plan for this workshop. Even if things are not totally settled yet, it might benefit folks to have a general idea of what’s happening. Thanks!

Ernie, if you wouldn’t mind looking into the local guy, we could probably find the funds to get him out to do a workshop. The only folks I know are in D.C.
r

Reply from Ernie Hood

There is a local fellow who is a real expert at podcasting…I’ve seen him present before, and he’s very good at it. I’d be happy to contact him about presenting at a SCONC meeting or conducting a workshop – not sure if he charges, but we can certainly find out. If he does charge, would we have a budget for that sort of thing? Or do we need to reserve it until we have some funding support?

I think the first thing to understand is that there are really two elements at work with podcasting – the technical, to ensure that you’re getting proper distribution and your product sounds good, and the more traditional tenets of radio/audio journalism, which are really unaffected by the specific transmission medium.

I need to learn how to do podcasting at some point the near future. I’d love to get a workshop together on that. UNC has a great journalism program and some broadcast classes. Wonder if they’d set something up for us?
