When graphs go bad

How can one visualize a citation network well? It seems as if there are a lot of attempts to do so, but none seem to work too well. I’ve tried (and failed!) The most recent example I’ve found is this page generated by the BMJ’s CiteMap tool.

Oy vay!

It looks as if CiteMap uses the popular GraphViz software for layout, which is a good tool for a first pass at graph drawing, but doesn’t seem to scale especially well. In addition, the generated image doesn’t play nicely with the other elements on the web page.

    • We have covered quite a few citation map systems in _Nature_’s news section over the years, but a quick attempt at using the search engine does not reveal any returns. Declan Butler is very knowledgeable about this field and wrote some or most of these stories over the years, so I’ll invite him to join this group or you can contact him directly (via nature email system).
