Mapping real time internet traffic data (Akamai)

A very beautiful map from Akamai showing real time traffic and attack data on the Internet.

Some interesting observations: as I write, New York (where I live) accounts for 4.4% of Internet traffic. California by itself accounts for 7.4%. London has an absolute latency of 155ms. Venezuela has had 382 attacks in the last 24 hours.

The map uses a focus+context technique, allowing users to see the world at a glance and then focus on specific areas by dragging a box around the screen. The interaction between the global view and the focused view is seamless, allowing for instantaneous feedback to the user. Their color choice is also excellent, making it easy to pick out high traffic or high attack countries.
