A nice new visualization from the folks at the NYTimes, titled All of Inflation’s Little Parts
I really like the petri dish/stained glass window look of this visualization. The color coding is nice and intuitive, and the interaction (mouse rollovers) is subtle, yet informative. The layout seems to be a modified TreeMap (??), but I find the circular layout much more pleasing.

It’s actually a Voronoi Treemap, something that Michael Balzer and Oliver Deussen came up with to address some of the issues with existing tree map layouts. Their InfoVis 2005 paper gives some good insights into these issues.
