Professional writing societies?

Hi everyone —
For the last year or so, I’ve been dabbling in freelance science writing. I joined the National Association of Science Writers as a student member, and I thought the the newsletters provided a lot of useful information for someone starting out.
I’m curious to see what other people thought about the advantages of becoming a full member. As far as I can tell, the best resources seem to come from the networking and workshops that take place at national meetings and workshops, neither of which I’ve attended.
Are there any other members out there who can share their experiences? Alternatively, are there any other professional societies that you find more useful?

I too would be interested to know of the benefits as I’ve never tried to join. For those who write books in the UK, the Society of Authors is well worth joining. It has one of the more interesting journals, provides useful services like contract checking, and gives you automatic membership of ALCS (Authors’ Licensing & Copyright Society), the body that collects royalties when people make copies of your work etc.
