Science writers on policy issues

Hello, I am looking for science journalist interested in science policy issues. A strange specialization seems to exist among people trained in science journalism, as such issues as academic freedom, science policy or how best to govern the institutions of science seldom figure among the topics chosen. I would appreciate contact with people who have worked with these issues.

Maybe I am simply wrong, not being a professional science writer or journalist myself.

    • Hi Claus, as I am currently working at Research Fortnight (a research policy magazine) I am not available for other jobs, but I just wanted to say that, according to what I’ve seen in the last few months, you are right. People can never get enough of specialization, I think, and some journalists are experts in research policy.

    • I agree with Barbara,

Here in Brazil, one of the best popular science magazine is published actually by a funding agency, called Fapesp. More than a half of the magazine is dedicated to research policy.

Although I would rather research news than research policy news, I am working now on a story proposal about the Brazilian government priorities concerning science…

    • Hello Claus, this reply no doubt comes long after you need it, but I am one such science journalist. I am particularly interested in intellectual patenting, emerging technologies etc. and not so much on academic freedom or science institutions… What is your interest in science policy?

    • Claus,
I am afraid that I am not directing you to an individual but a group of inidividuals who are interested in the same topic, plus how science/scientists in general communicate their work to the outside world. The Science Communication Consortium has had an impressive gathering of writers, academics and scientists in a series of seminars to discuss various topics in science communication. If you find yourself in the NYC area, please do not hesitate to drop me a line and I will try to connect you with this group and their wider circle. In the meanwhile, the past events link on the site brings up a summary of previous presentations which may be helpful. Also Liz Oswald, one of the founders of the SCC, is on nature network and perhaps even a member of this group.
