I am about to update the bit of the web site of the Association of British Science Writers that offers tips to would-be science writers. The folks at Science has asked me to mention their internships.

For the sake of completeness, I thought I would ask here if anyone knows of other publications with similar scheme.

I gather than New Scientist has one. Any others I should add?

    • I have been noticing in recent issues of The Economist a Casement internship for science journalism, which might be relevant for ABSW too.

    • Nature has a News writing internship programme, which has been going for years. There is also a NPG-wide internship programme of several years’ standing which covers all types of job in science publishing, including but not limited to writing. All these internships/programmes are advertised in NatureJobs (free access).

    • Many thanks. Both will join the list. If I can track down the details.

Good to see the Casement award still running. I am old enough to have drunk too much with Richard at various events.

    • There are also internships at some of the specialized Nature research journals – or at least at Nature Medicine, which is is advertising one at present.

    • Thanks to everyone for all this useful stuff.

By coincidence, I received the following email yesterday:

      The Richard Casement internship
      Jan 31st 2008
      From The Economist print edition

We invite applications for the 2008 Richard Casement internship.

This is for a would-be journalist to spend three months of the summer working on the newspaper in London, writing about science and technology. Our aim is more to discover writing talent in a science
student or scientist than scientific aptitude in a budding journalist.

Applicants should write a letter introducing themselves, along with an original article of about 600 words that they think would be suitable
for publication in the science and technology section. They should be prepared to come for an interview in London or New York, at their own
expense. A small stipend will be paid to the successful candidate.

Applications must reach us by February 22nd. They should be sent to: casement2008@economist.com

    • I couldn’t find this thread earlier, so I posted a new forum topic about Nature’s Munich office internship programme, see here

    • The Bulletin of the World Health Organization in Geneva offer internships in news writing or in other editing tasks. You apply through the general World Health Organization scheme, specifying you want to work at the Bulletin.
