I haven’t finalized travel arrangements yet, but I think there’s a good chance I’ll make it in time for Thursday, and I’ll almost definitely be there for Friday.

Plus one more – confirmed that I have a flight in time for Friday and am not sleeping under London Bridge.

Hmm. And here I was debating taking a weekend in London with my family… maybe I had better plead grueling hours. I just had a look at fares and times and would definitely have to be there from Friday night. Is there a clever solution for lodging? 100 people (or large proportion thereof) might be a bit much on your sofas.

Sorry, Matt, I could have sworn that the last post before I wrote mine above was Bob’s —but yes, something along the lines you outline sounds as if it will work—1 conference and 3 social events, that ratio sounds about right.

I suggest we arrange something for both nights—as Martin wrote, people travelling from outside London (most, probably) may want to meet up on the evening before the meeting, and it would be nice to do so.
And equally, a social event on the Saturday post-conference when we are all friends and/or have thrown nastursia or nasturtiums at each other, would be pleasant.

Well, it’s certainly an option for me, but I don’t know how many people will be in town. We could do:

Thur night: scientific pub crawl
Fri daytime: tour of sciency museums etc.
Fri evening: a meal out somewhere
Sat daytime: CONFERENCE!
Sat evening: Conference evening reception (probably a drink or two at the Royal Institution, before moving on to a hired room in a pub).

Would Thursday be an option? We can then recover on Friday morning, and spend the afternoon doing our impressions of gormless tourists. I guess this depends on how long people intend to spend in London.

The pubs would be quieter on Thursday too.

The trouble with doing it on Saturday night is that somewhere around 100 people might want to come along – and that just isn’t practical for a pub crawl.

But I’d certainly put a vote in for Saturday night rather than Friday – the speakers might be a little… ‘tired’, else.
