Hi Guys,
Today in Nature, John Kirkland from the Association of Commonwealth Universities wrote an interesting review on the book called..
Toward a Global PhD? Forces and Forms in Doctoral Education Worldwide
by Maresi Nerad & Mimi Heggelund

Thanks for flagging this up, Amit. It’s amazing that there are enough “differences in graduate programs” to fill an entire book! The book review makes a brief mention of the slow increase in distance learning, as applied to doctorates. I am curious which fields this could be relevant for. Certainly not biology. Humanities, perhaps? Or computer science? I would imagine that a long-distance doctorate would put even more pressure on the advisee/advisor relationship. On the other hand, having your PI far far away could make things go a great deal smoother (depending on the PI, of course)!

Hi Anna,
Distance learning is really exciting and continuously developing field.
Today, because of high tech mediated communication, universities can deliver courses appealing to variety of students living around the world.
And you are right… humanities and computer science are more popular choices.
But I am also confused about the quality of research and authenticity of the courses. There are many fake online universities offering PhD and other degree courses.
