In line with the topic, I would like to iterate on the difficulities on getting access to Nature journals in my country, Malaysia. Does anyone know how could I overcome this obstacle?

    • Dear Saralla

There is a United Nations programme for biomedical (HINARI), agricultural (AGORA) and environmental (OARE) journals, in which publishers have agreed to make access free online to some countries where it is difficult for people and institutions to afford subscriptions. These organisations have useful linked websites, so here is the HINARI link to start you off.

You can also ask your university or institution’s libaray if it holds a site licence. If so, you will get free access online. Here is some information about Nature in which you and/or your librarian can find out about subscriptions and site licenses.

      Best wishes
      Maxine.

    • Dear Maxine Clarke,

Thanks for your prompt reply. Its a good piece of information, but unfotunately, my country is not listed in the site for free access or even partial charge. As my university, been subcribing other means of journals except from Nature as it seems to be very expensive to them and my institution could not afford to subcribe one.

Anyway, thanks for your suggestion. I guess I just need to bear with the situation here since no other way to overcome that:(

    • I’m surprised you say Nature is expensive compared with other journals, Saralla, as I had thought it was not. I am afraid I don’t have any direct dealings with pricing, but maybe you or your university library would like to take a look at our Librarian’s Gateway which might provide some help and/or useful information.

A personal subscription to Nature for a student in Malaysia is currently £125 for a year, which is for print and full online access. That is almost exactly £2.50 per issue.

    • Dear Maxine Clarke,

Thanks again for your information but I as a student don’t have the right to compel or force the librarian to subcribe to Nature journals as that is beyond my authority. I myself could not afford to pay 125 pounds per year as that is preety much for me.

Is there any way of Nature contacting the university and promote the subcription to Nature journals in more affordable way?

      Thanks

    • I think if you go to the Librarian gateway link, Saralla, there is a “recommend to your librarian” option. If you and your friends who want to read nature use it, the librarian might well decide to subscribe, or at least can enquire of the site licence department here.

    • Dear Maxine Clarke,

Thanks again for your kind information. I will work it out.

      Cheers!
