You certainly aren’t the first person to express that view, Richard – I’ve read many articles, from all perspectives, pointing out this ugliness.
The problem everyone seems to fall down on is that “blogs” is what everyone calls them.
It reminds me a bit of when people suggest changing the way we number years in the calendar—what we have may be illogical but it is what everyone uses.
I am with you on not liking the term “blog”, but the word “weblog” seems a bit stilted.
When the “web” first started, it was Nature house style to call it World Wide Web, but that now looks very dated, and we all call it “the web”. General useage wins out on these matters, usually (if sometimes sadly!).

Am I the only one here who despises the neologism ‘blog’?

‘Weblog’ I certainly understand, and I could see where ‘wlog’ might come from. But ‘blog’ is an abomination, and I shudder every time I see it associated with this enterprise.

Brand identity manager? Pff, we make this up as we go along.

Here’s a couple more. If you like one, just save it to desktop and upload as the icon. I can easily knock together alternative ideas.

Matt, I’d either move the text to not cover over the graphic (I’m sure your brand identity manager has just had some kittens), or make it BLOGS not BLOG, so that it is evenly balanced across the bottom.

Matt, I love the logo! It’s great. Would it be possible to make it say “Blogger” or “NNBlog” instead of “Blog” but still keep the “O” in the white circle? Is there anyplace else we can use the logo? Like at the head of the blog pages or even on each blog?

As much fun as acronym-incorporated words-art is, I prefer a word or a name that I can pronounce in conversation and that sparks curiosity when I say it.

Nogglers and Natters fits that requirement for me.

The poll is indeed going well and there are some clear leaders in the pack. To us non US based peeps, this is like our own wee election campaign.

I’m going to pimp in with my own last minute suggestion – only kidding…

Given what Matt says, an “interim” logo gets my vote. Do we need a poll for that? Tee hee ;-)

More pressingly, this topic keeps appearing on our forums homepage, so maybe it’s time to give this group a more eye-catching logo (or are you waiting till you have a name? You can always change the image later on).

Martin and Anna, perhaps you two are the ones who have been steering this boat/discussion with more determination. For what my advice is worth, you may consider proceeding in two steps. First, you would ask the question whether this community wants to pick a name that differs from Nature Network Bloggers. If the answer to this question is yes, you may then ask to vote from the the list that you have prepared (and which has expanded considerably). For both purposes, you can use the Took that Graham indicated.
Again in my opinion, it this does not get done, this thread’s traffic will slow down.

Do we need a nickname? Surely the point of a friendly nickname is that it evolves over time, or just emerges? Isn’t it meant to be emergent and, well, informal?

If we wanted to go for one, I’d want one I could remember to spell, and one that was pronounceable. My current thought is Nabbers or Nabblers – hints of Nature Bloggers, sounds quite chatty (hints of natter), lends itself to verb use too.

What do you think, my fellow Nabblers?

We don’t have a clear vote for a nickname. ScieNNtist and Natloggers have been named more than once, and several people suggested to keep the name Nature Network Bloggers. Should we go ahead and have a poll among all Nature Network users?

Or we could just leave it like it is, after all we could have more than one nickname. And over time one of the many suggestions might stick. The official name is still Nature Network Bloggers. What do you think?
