  It is rather useful to have this forum: I am hardly new to Nature Network but still have outstanding questions, or worries, I should say, about my degrees of freedom.

  How informal can I be when writing on this site?

  And how closely related to science does the content have to be?

  Hi Matt,

  Seems like networking might be finally of some use outside killing the ” my samples are spinning” and “my media is warming up” times :-))...

  I read the book called ” Outside the Ivory Tower” towards the end of my Ph.D from the States (Rutgers, NJ) and was very interested to consider an alternate career as a science-writer. Wondering if you could possibly shed some lights on the avenues available in and around London for that. Anyone else who is reading this, if you guys know anything, you are more than welcome to share it! Thanks in anticipation. Have a good week everyone.

  Hello. I’ve just moved to London to work as an adviser on physical sciences, IT and communication in the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology. Prior to that I was writing and editing for Physics World magazine in Bristol, and before that doing a PhD in particle physics. I hope to come along to the next monthly drinks.

  Cheers Martin – you’d be more than welcome.

  Sayandip – there are many routes into science writing. The two commonest ways would be:

  1) Write for whoever you can, for free, to build up a portfolio. Good places to start are university magazines and even blogs (if well written and informative). Once you have a few ‘clips’ under your belt, you can approach more professional sources.

  2) Join a course, such as Imperial’s Sci Com course (London). (You could ask questions on their forum: http://network.nature.com/london/group/ImperialSciCommers)

  These give you plenty of experience and can often be taken as evening classes.

  Hi I’m from London too.
  I have joined this forum to get more information……I’m a patient of anxiety so I like to have all the updated information about this illness and medicines…..I used to refer to this United kingdom pharmacy directory for updates. I’m fed up reading literatures…..now I want to converse with people who have the same problem as me…..I want to share my problems with someone.
