Networking librarians?

Maybe this could be the only topic in this group. The simple question is: Should librarians network for scientific reasons?

To me, the library and information sciences always seemed to be very concentrated on national issues. International discussion or even collaboration does not really take place.

Maybe networking tools and platforms like Nature Network could establish a new and innovative culture of sharing and discussion?

    • The networking experiment has been moved to Ning.

    • The simple answer is: Yes, librarians should network for scientific reasons. But maybe I understand “scientific reasons” in another way. Like Meredith farkas, I would like to go where the users are. If they are on Nature Network, why not serve them here? Just to experiment if we can be useful to them and gain some reputation for the modern library? In that way, a forum called “Innovative Library” would make much sense for me.

    • I agree with Oliver – I just recently joined this site and my reason was to see whether it is useful for users, and to be where they are. I think today’s generation of researchers will have very different expectations of information delivery from 20 years ago.

Sharing, Privacy and Trust in Our Networked World

The practice of using a social network to establish and enhance
relationships based on some common ground-shared interests, related
skills, or a common geographic location-is as old as human societies,
but social networking has flourished due to the ease of connecting on
the Web. This OCLC membership report explores this web of social
participation and cooperation on the Internet and how it may impact the
      librarys role, including:

The use of social networking, social media, commercial and library
      services on the Web
How and what users and librarians share on the Web and their attitudes
      toward related privacy issues
      Opinions on privacy online
      Libraries
current and future roles in social networking

The report is based on a survey (by Harris Interactive on behalf of
OCLC) of the general public from six countries-Canada, France, Germany,
Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States-and of library directors
from the U.S. The research provides insights into the values and
      social-networking habits of library users.

Print copies of the report will be available for order on Monday,
      October 29.
