Figures are an important part of a well-written paper. The following paper is a nice summary of the topic of error bars in these figures:

    • I think I can fairly say that Dr Vaux has been instrumental in Nature’s error-bar vigilance! Error bars are even enshrined on our “green checklist”: no manuscript can progress from acceptance into production until all boxes are ticked.

    • Ooh yes, we did this as a ‘journal club’ in a lab meeting last year.

    • Am I allowed to comment on inappropriate use of bar charts in the paper? :-)

      Thanks, Martin – I think this sort of thing is very useful: I find well-drawn graphs easier to read.
