Where is evo-devo going?

Hi Folks. Evo Devo has expanded into many different fields and it continues growing into several areas. However, for me it is often not really clear what the future will be and what the main focus is. Do we need more genomes? More lab species? Better phylogenies? How do we learn more about the evolution of development – or evolution by changes in development?? Is the study of microevolution the key, but how can we then interfere the evolution of animal (or plant) organ systems? Where are fossils in between all that?

Maybe anybody can explain an comparative developmental biologist what their opinion is about this field.

    • Actually a pretty lucid “perspective” on the directions and reaches of evo-devo as a discipline has been elucidated by a renowned “evo-devotee” Gerd B Muller.

Müller GB.Evo-devo: extending the evolutionary synthesis.Nat Rev Genet. 2007 Dec;8(12):943-9.

It may be a good idea for those interested, to read this article before we can start putting forth our ideas, opinions and criticisms.
