What do people want from e-science?

I think that we are at a sufficient interest level from both scientists and “lay-persons” to investigate this question. In all likelyhood there are several divergent wishes, but also some common elements. We certainly have the proliferation of resources for reading about and following scientific developments, so what is e-science going to bring to the table that is different? Are we going to be a system of virtual labs? Is this going to be a metadata space full of open datasets? Or do we enter a system of collective efforts dedicated to answering the most “popular” questions/problems?
