International projects

Brazil recently had its first citizen in space, cosmonaut Marcos Pontes. This mission was part of the much-debated participation of Brazil in the ISS program. This participation also includes the manufacturing of parts for the station and the realization of experiments there.

On the same time there is the expectation that Brazil might take a small role in the ITER project through an agreement with Portugal. Recently the Mionistry of Science and Technology (MCT) defined the composition of the committee of the Rede Nacional de Fusão, RNF (National Fusion Network). It will promote the national research on fusion and the participation of Brazil on international projects (read “ITER”).

Some people are against the participation of Brazil in both projects, and say we should for example use the money to create more doctorate scholarships. What is the best strategy for the country and science, not considering increses in funding?
