As SL’ang Life Magazine, it is our great pleasure to invite you to a conference „Educational possibilities in Second Life”which will be held in SLang Life Lirary

The aim of the conference is to present the most interesting educational projects in SL to its residents.

We strongly believe in the potential of such ventures. They are an excellent proposition for people open to effective use of their presence in Second Life. Very often they constitute the only way to pursue personal interests or gain new knowledge, due to its easy accessibility..

SL’ang Life magazine strives to actively participate in promoting initiatives leading to the creation of a knowledgeable community in SL.

A transcript of all presentations will be available at SL’ang Life magazine’s website, and a report from the meetings will be printed in our magazine.

May 3rd:

8:00 am SLT - Michael Wright (aka Mrags Writer), Virtual World Project

The project was to develop and create content for an environment based on a class-developed theme on the Otis Island in Second Life. The project required students to use team building, out-of-the-box creative thinking, 3D and 2D virtual tools as well as to work with a budget (3000 lindens per class), and with a limited amount of building blocks (3100 primitives per class). Each team/class proceeded to develop a production pipeline and a theme for their area. Three hours of in-class time and ten hours of outside of class time were devoted to this project. None of the 55 students had previous Second Life experience.

They were required to learn the Second Life software to engage in the process and then to create and design their own personal avatar. After creating the avatar, each had to manage to get to Otis Island at an assigned time. At the island they were given brief introductions to movement, flying and building. The production pipeline began with brainstorming sessions. Once the themes were established the teams went to work creating content for their individual areas. The themes developed were “Heaven and Hell,” “Pirates and Atlantis,” and “Lost World and Mythology.”

9:00 pm SLT - Julynn Lilliehook, SL Law School

Julynn is the Founder and Dean of the Second Life Law School. Knowing the general public is under-educated about the laws that affect them, she created a place to teach the about law in the United States as well the legal systems around the world.

“My basic concept for the project is a place for everyone to learn about the legal concepts which affect them in their daily klives. It is not for credit and there is no graduation. It is a place for us to educate the general public about US and International law.”
