hi,

im a student working with second Life as the basis for my project but need some second life users to answer some questions to help me with my research…..

1. Why make the buildings if you can walk through walls?

2. Why make it realistic / mimic real life?

3. Why create cars / hot air balloons if you can fly / teleport?

4. Why recreate a pre-existing world to play in, why not play in the ‘real’ world?

5. Anything else that you would like to comment on / say about second life.

This would be a great help, thank you.

    • Charlotte,

      1. Why make the buildings if you can walk through walls?

Buildings are useful to separate work areas but I think they should be as open as possible to allow easy access.

      2. Why make it realistic / mimic real life?

That depends on your style but I think the focus should be more on leveraging the strengths of Second Life, not replicating reality.

      3. Why create cars / hot air balloons if you can fly / teleport?

For aesthetics and fun only – of course it is easier to fly or teleport to get somewhere.

      4. Why recreate a pre-existing world to play in, why not play in the ‘real’ world?

You should do both – but sometimes it is hard for people to get together physically. Second Life is about meeting people from everywhere.

      5. Anything else that you would like to comment on / say about second life.

Keep asking questions, especially to people you mean in Second Life, and experiment.

    • I agree with Jean-Claude on question 1 about the buildings and walls – it helps separate different areas.

On why make it realistic, I don’t think it’s necessary to exactly replicate the real world, but I do think buildings and other “familiar” structures are helpful for providing a bit of grounding – especially when newcomers arrive, it can be really overwhelming and confusing. Buildings, doors, signs posts, are all easily recognisable objects which help acclimatise and I think that kind of familiarity helps newcomers settle in more quickly until they find their feet.

    • There is no real reason for making a building, or making things realistic, or creating vehicles, or recreating a pre-existing world, but then, there is no real reason not to. Sometimes, a building serves a purpose. For the most part, buildings in SL really don’t. Indeed, there are plenty of people doing all sorts of different objects in SL that would not exist in RL. But the buildings and every day objects are the easiest things to notice, so that is what gets your attention. But, there are also plenty of unusual, bizarre, fantastic, outlandish, and even disturbing things in SL as well… many things that have no name in RL.
