Question about crystallography

Hi,
I am an undergraduate student and I am taking a class on X-ray Techniques in Chemistry. Mostly we are looking at inorganic crystallography. However, for our project presentation I am looking at the new GPCR structure.
My question is as follows:
In inorganic crystallography, we have a single crystal where we are able to align the molecules in a uniform plane to enable diffraction.
But, biomolecules are complex, how do you achieve alignment.
I have read about using metal ions/ligands to enable alignment, but that changes the native conformation of the protein.
I hope my question is not too broad. Could you direct me to some research articles, so that I have better understanding of the technique difference between inorganic and biomolecule crystallography.
Thank you very much for your time and advice.
Shirin.

you better visit www.hamptonresearch.com, you can find many things over there about X-ray crystallography. I hope it’ll help you.
